Churchill Brothers’ forward Balwant Singh was adjudged the 2014 Indian Player of the Year at the FPAI awards ceremony on Tuesday. It might have come as a surprise to many as Bengaluru FC’s Sunil Chhetri was the front runner to get the award.

However, nothing can be taken away from the Punjabi striker who has scored 10 goals in the league and helped Churchill avoid the drop. The 27 year old had a good time in the Federation Cup too as he scored 4 goals in 5 games and lifted the cup with Churchill Brothers. Singh can further impress as Churchill made it to the 2nd round of the AFC Cup.

The award will act as a launch pad for the talented striker as he revives his career from a dull start and becomes a special player that his club and country yearns for. Striker Sunil Chhetri can count himself unlucky as he too has had a good season, but again, Balwant Singh has done enough to deserve the award.
