In what will be one of the group stages’ high profile clashes last World Cup’s finalists meet at the Arena Fonte Nova, Salvador  here are some of the key clashes which will make tonight’s game which could define this game and make it an even better watch.

Robin van Persie vs Gerard Pique :

Pique will face enough competition from Dutch front man Robin Van Persie. It could be all about Persie’s close control and conversion rate which could win the battle for him. But Pique is much more mature than he was 4 years back and will be looking to emulate his former captain Carlos Puyol’s exploits.

Arjen Robben vs  Jordi Alba

Robben , one of the World’s foremost attackers would’ve definitely not forgotten the miss that could’ve seen his country lift the World Cup four years back. He will be going one on one against Barcelona Left Back Jordi Alba. The Spaniard is one of the few men capable of keeping up with Robben’s pace and agility. I would still call this one in favor of Robben though considering Alba’s injuries over the last year.

Diego Costa vs Stefan de Vrij

Two new comers on the World Cup scene.  Diego Costa was Atletico’s spearhead in the last season following Falcao’s move to Monaco.  Meanwhile the 22yr old Centre back de Vrij is rated as one of the World’s better young defenders.  He was key to Feyenoord’s resurgence in the Dutch League last season. Their performances can completely change the fortunes of their respective countries and a lot is expected of them. It’ll be interesting to see them go head to head later tonight.

Xabi Alonso vs Nigel de Jong

This is one to watch out for.  The World remembers the 2010 final more about De Jong kicking Alonso on his chest. Alonso, one of the world’s best orchestrators will clash once again with the Milan midfielder. The Milanese might not be amongst the World’s best but would definitely be raring to go against the team which cost them the Cup at South Africa .

Considering that these are two of the World’s best teams playing each other today you will have more than these battles to look forward to. Xavi spreading his command across the midfield, Iniesta leaving opponent defenses in tangles , Sneijder’s  attacking prowess   and a lot of young talent in lads like Jordy Klasie , Bruno Martins Indi and Koke.
