Italy and  Uruguay last met each other in a battle for third place in last year’s Confederations Cup 2013, also held in Brazil. Held at the Arena Fonte Nova, Italy took the lead early through Davide Astori midway through the first half. A 2nd half brace by Uruguay front man Edinson Cavani either side of a Diamanti goal ensured a 2-2 draw, with the match taken to penalties. Uruguay had little luck with spot kicks, as only Cavani and Suarez scored and Italy emerged victorious winning 3-2 on penalties.

Final Score: Italy 2 – 2 Uruguay ( Astori 24′, Diamanti 73′, Cavani 58′ 78′)

Friendly 2011

Held at the Stadio Olimpico in November 2011, Italy and Uruguay clashed in an international friendly game. The match did not turn out to be an exciting affair as an early goal by current Rayo Vallecano forward Sebastián Fernández in the 3rd minute was enough to seal the win for Uruguay. Full back Álvaro Pereira also saw red late into the game for a late challenge.

Final Score: Italy 0 – 1 Uruguay ( Fernández 3′)

Friendly 2002

In a 2002 Friendly, at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, Italy and Uruguay saw out a draw as Christian Panucci scored for Italy and Sebastián Abreu for Uruguay very late into the 2nd half in the 73rd and 77th minute respectively.

Final Score: Italy 1 – 1 Uruguay ( Panucci 73′, Abreu 77′)

Italy later went to win finish third, with West Germany winning the ultimate crown.

Final Score: Italy 2 – 0 Uruguay ( Schillaci 65′, Serena 83′)
