The Kolkata franchise of the much anticipated Indian Super League (ISL) will be either called Atletico de Kolkata or Atletico Kolkata. The team which has former India captain Sourav Ganguly spearheading it in partnership with Champions League finalists Atletico Madrid, is expected to decide upon the club colours and crest by Wednesday according to The Telegraph, India.

There is a debate on dropping the ‘de’ from the name of the franchise.

“At the end of the day, we have to make things simple for the fans, who’ll be driving the franchise,” co-owner Atletico de Madrid’s managing director (business development) Javier Martinez told The Telegraph on Tuesday at a dinner hosted by Harshvardhan Neotia, a co-owner of the franchise.

The Spanish official also added that the decision on the name, colours and crest will be taken by the Board and the co-owners based in Kolkata.

Owner and CEO Miguel Angel di Marin revealed that the logo will be in line with that of Atletico Madrid.

Both Marin and Martinez reserved words of praise to co-owner Sourav Ganguly.

“From what we’ve found out, Sourav played with passion and, as captain, injected steel into India’s cricket team. Well, Atletico de Madrid is all about passion and playing with plenty of spirit,” Martinez pointed out.

Marin has also raised the issue of improving the playing surface on the Salt Lake Stadium where the team is expected to play their home games.
