Steven Gerrard celebrates with his teammates after scoring

Liverpool moved above Manchester City after registering their 7th successive win in the Barclays Premier League as they beat Sunderland 2-1.

Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge gave Liverpool a two goal advantage and the Merseyside club were on course for another comfortable win, however, on loan Swansea midfielder Ki Sung Yueng scored in the 76th minute to provide a glimmer of hope to the Sunderland faithful who were present at Anfield.

Liverpool started well but were restrained by a compact Sunderland defense who forced them to take shots from outside the penalty area. It was in the 39th minute when Captain Steven Gerrard struck a free kick into the net after Luis Suarez was fouled just outside the penalty area by Sunderland defender Santiago Vergini.

Liverpool went into half time with a one goal lead and instantly doubled their advantage in the second half when a deflected Daniel Sturridge shot ended in the back of the net.

Sunderland, who had rarely threatened in the first half, sprang to action after manager Gus Poyet made a double substitution by bringing on Ki Sung Yueng and Adam Johnson. The duo combined in a corner to reduce the deficit.

Although there was some pressure by Sunderland late on, Liverpool grinded out the required win that leaves them only a point behind Chelsea.
