The Bengaluru FC’s squad were cheered by the fans when they landed a day after their league conquering victory over Dempo SC, this overwhelmed them as they weren’t expecting such a reception.

Skipper Sunil Chhetri was absolutely delighted and said, “These I tell you are the best fans in the world. Right from day one against Mohun Bagan, to this day, they’ve been with us, supporting us. They’ve taken us where we are now. It’s an amazing reception and an amazing feeling.”

Striker Robin Singh, who was in tears after the win against Dempo, felt that the whole campaign proved all their doubters wrong, “This has never happened to any one of us. If I had a choice I would stay with BFC all my life. And for those all those who thought of us as rejects, with all due respect, this I-League title is a slap across their faces.”

Chettri admitted that he had initial doubts on whether his side could win the league or not, but as each game passed, his belief grew stronger and stronger that they could, ” “Not the top finish, but once we started training, we slowly realized we were going to be a difficult team to beat. That we were going to be tough opponents for all the clubs in the I-League.

“Without demeaning anyone, I have to admit that this is truly the best club. Right from the owners to the ball boys, we all knew what we had to do,” he added.

Another piece of history is in the reckoning as Chhetri can break Bhaichung Bhutia’s 17 year record of most goals scored by an Indian in a season, a tally of 14. Chhetri can overtake Bhutia’s record if he scores in Bengaluru’s final league game against Sporting Clube de Goa. When asked about it, he said, “I’m not getting any rest on that. Everybody wants me to score and finish the season as the top scorer. And I’m going to try my best not to disappoint them.”
