Chennaiyin FC manager Marco Materazzi was delighted with his team’s performance after the side defeated FC Pune City 3-1 at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium in Chennai last night to climb to the top of the Indian Super League table.

A John Stiven Mendoza strike in the 62nd minute put the hosts in the lead following a goalless first half. But the lead didn’t last long as Pune equalised just eight minutes later courtesy an own goal from Eric Djemba-Djemba.

However, Bruno Pelissari scored just seconds later and Jeje Lalpekhlua put the third one in during injury time to ensure that the Mahendra Singh Dhoni co-owned side bagged all three points at home yesterday.

Having scored five more goals in the tournament that Atletico de Kolkata’s 12, the Tamil Nadu based outfit replaced the West Bengal outfit at the top, as the ISL finally saw new league leaders.

And Materazzi is ecstatic with the result, and insisted that the team desperately needed to win after tying their last four fixtures.

It was not good to get the draws in the last four games and we deserved to win”, the Italian coach was quoted as saying by ISL’ s official website.

Today the team played extremely well, and we won as a team.

“I am very happy with a 3-1 victory and hopefully we can take the confidence to the next game”, the 41-year-old former Inter Milan player added.

The South Indian club will hope to continue their dominion when they take on Mumbai City FC at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.
