Liverpool’s defensive frailties were exposed once again as they needed penalties to overcome their opponents Middlesbrough. The game finished in dramatic fashion as an error by Liverpool allowed Middlesbrough to equalize in the added time of extra time. The penalties shootout finished 14-13 in favour of Liverpool, which was also the longest penalty shootout in the history of the League cup.
